    parking space

    Sunday, September 14, 2008, 7:13 AM [General]

There's this Wizard who worked in a factory. Everything was satisfactory except that miscreants, taking advantage of his good nature, would steal his parking spot. This continued until he put up the following sign: "This parking space belongs to the Wizard. ... Violators will be toad."

    how to?

i have been at work for quite some time developing a hands on, fun class on the Renaissance. My original idea was to focus on the music and dress, but the logistics of that escaped me, so i began creating classes on weapons, defenses, every day life, the feudal system itself (including the fact that it was not as universal and comprehensive as we've long thought), and the role of music.

Now my sister has kick started things by mentioning to my niece's teacher that i have something going. Said teacher is not only interested, but wants to focus on music. This means i have to figure out the logistics of presenting four and five part music as one person.

Part of the instigation of this whole project is that i sing with a 10 voice A Capella Renaissance group, and it may be that one (or more) of the group might want to go with me, which makes the initial presentation easier. If not, a ballad or two and my trusty CD player will have to do, i guess.

One advantage i have with this particular group is that they read music and have been reading through and learning 3 part music for years. i know, however, that i cannot count on that with most kids. i can then move on to the non standardization of music notation, and separate scores for each part. Put them in a circle and let them experience it for themselves. That's the easy part.

i'm not sure how to handle dress with just my costume for an example. i can download some drawings, but i'm not sure how to emphasize the differences. i do have a couple of costume expert friends who might have some ideas... harmony, keith
